Speechify Pricing in 2026: What $29 a Month Really Buys
Reader, Studio and API priced side by side, with a break-even model for ops teams, the billing risks to watch and cheaper alternatives.
Summary
Speechify pricing splits into three products: the Reader app at $29 a month (a yearly plan around $139 to $159), Studio at $100 or $300 a year for 86,400 or 345,600 credits, and an API from $6 per 1M characters. For ops managers who read 5 hours or more a week, Premium pays back in about 2.3 hours of recovered time. The risk is billing, with trial-to-annual charge complaints worth watching.
Speechify pricing is three separate bills, not one. The Reader app costs $29 a month on the live pricing page, Studio runs $100 to $300 a year for 86,400 to 345,600 credits, and the API starts at $6 per 1M characters. Our verdict: fair value for heavy readers, a poor fit for occasional use, and a billing process to watch closely.
- Value at heavy use
- 8/10
- Price transparency
- 5/10
- Billing trust
- 6/10
- Plan flexibility

- 8.5/10
- The free plan stays usable: 1.5x speed, 10 voices, no time limit stated
- Studio credit math is simple: 1 credit per second of voiceover
- API from $6 per 1M characters is far cheaper per hour than the app
- The yearly Premium price sits behind a toggle and sources quote $139 to $159
- Trial-to-annual charges of $139 to $230 recur in Reddit, BBB and Trustpilot complaints
- Reader, Studio and API are three subscriptions, so credits never carry across

How we checked the pricing
- Plan paid
- None (public pricing pages and the free tier inspected)
- Version tested

This is a pricing audit, not a 30-day hands-on test. On 13 October 2026 we captured the live Speechify Reader, Studio and API pricing pages in a 1440 by 900 browser and recorded every published plan, credit allowance and per-character rate. We then converted credits into hours of audio, modelled break-even for an ops manager billed at an assumed $60 per hour, and cross-read Trustpilot, G2, Reddit and secondary trackers for billing complaints. Voice quality scores come from reviewer reports, not from our own listening tests. Where sources disagree, such as the yearly Premium price, we show the range instead of picking one number.
Should you buy this?
YES if you...
- Ops managers and analysts who read 5+ hours a week of SOPs, audits and reports
- Dyslexic or ADHD readers who already use text-to-speech daily
- Creators who need 20+ hours of voiceover a year with commercial rights (Studio)
- Developers who want cheap, predictable per-character TTS (API)
NO if you...
- Occasional readers under 30 minutes a day, since the free plan covers them
- Anyone who needs a hard monthly price cap and will not track a renewal date
- Teams that want one invoice, because Reader, Studio and API are billed separately

Hidden costs & gotchas
- The yearly Premium price is not shown on the monthly view, and sources quote $139 to $159
- Speechify's own cancellation guide says Premium is an annual subscription, while the pricing page leads with $29 a month
- Cancelling stops the next charge only, earlier charges are not refunded automatically
- Studio credits are also spent on pitch, speed and emotion changes, not only new scripts
- Dubbing costs 3 credits a second and avatars 30, against 1 for plain voiceover
- A Reader subscription includes no API or Studio usage
- A Reddit thread reports a higher App Store price than the web price
Studio sells credits, so convert them to hours first
Studio Starter lists 86,400 credits for $100 a year. At 1 credit per second of voiceover that is 24 hours of audio, or $4.17 an hour. The same credits buy only 8 hours of dubbing (3 credits per second) and 48 minutes of avatar video (30 per second). Re-exporting unchanged speech is free, but pitch or emotion tweaks spend credits again.
- Voiceover: 1 credit per second
- Dubbing: 3 credits per second
- Avatar: 30 credits per second
The API is the cheapest way to buy audio by the hour
SpeechifyAI bills in dollars per character, not credits. Starter includes 1.9M characters for $10 a month, which is $5.26 per 1M inside the allowance. Pro gives 13.5M for $99 and Scale 78M for $499. At roughly 54,000 characters per hour of speech (our estimate at 150 words a minute), Starter covers about 35 hours of audio a month.
- Free: 500K characters a month, no card
- Starter $10, Pro $99, Scale $499 a month
- No annual contract on self-serve plans

Pros & cons
Pros
- Heavy readers recover the cost in hours At an assumed $60 an hour, yearly Premium pays back after 2.3 hours of recovered reading time.
- Credit and character maths are public and checkable Studio states 1, 3 and 30 credits per second and the API states dollars per million characters, so a project can be budgeted before signing up.
- Reviewers rate support and voices highly Trustpilot sits at 4.7 from 7,158 reviews and the vendor replies to 91% of negative ones. G2 gives Studio 4.5 from 20 reviews.
Cons
- Yearly Premium price is hard to pin down The Reader page shows $29 a month and a Save 60% badge. Reddit and review sites quote $139, while one tracker quotes $159. Check the checkout screen, not a blog.
- Trial-to-annual billing complaints are recurrent Reddit, BBB and Trustpilot threads report $139 to $230 charges after a cancelled trial. A Trustpilot reviewer reported a GBP 150 renewal on 9 October 2026 after cancelling.
- Three products mean three bills Reader, Studio and API subscriptions are separate.
- Free voices are limited by design Speechify itself calls the 10 free voices robotic sounding, so the free plan works as a trial, not a daily tier.
Final verdict
Speechify pricing rewards people who listen every day and punishes people who forget a renewal date. If you read 5 hours or more a week of documents, the yearly Reader plan pays for itself in a couple of hours of recovered time, and reviewers rate the product highly. If you read in bursts, stay on the free plan or look at NaturalReader.
The real risk is billing, not price. Buy from a desktop browser, set a reminder before any trial ends, and screenshot the checkout price. For production audio, run the Studio numbers: $3.13 to $4.17 per voiceover hour is competitive, but dubbing and avatars burn credits 3 to 30 times faster. Developers should price the API per character and ignore the app tiers entirely.
We have not run a paid 30-day test, so treat voice quality as reviewer-reported.
- Value at heavy use 8/10 Pays back in about 2.3 hours a year
- Price transparency 5/10 Yearly price hidden behind a toggle
- Billing trust 6/10 Recurring renewal complaints

- Reviewer sentiment 8.5/10 4.7 on Trustpilot, 4.5 on G2
